Test & review: Hi3516D Hisilicon 4MP H.265 IP Camera

According to IHS, the total sales turnover of digital video surveillance equipment has been surpassed the analog equipment. since the price war has been initialized by Chinese manufacturers, HDTV network cameras become very affordable for everyone. Consumers keep chasing high end network cameras that deliver higher resolution and versatile function. Here, we bring you a 4 megapixel network camera EK4025D1-D, which is based on Hisilicon Hi3516D and OmniVision OV4689 CMOS image sensor.

EK4025D1-D is an ivory color IP67 rated network camera, it comes with metal housing design, included with 3-axis swivel bracket.

This product has a motorized 2.8-12mm lens, the camera can automatically adjust the focal length according to variable installations. Moreover, it has three infrared array LEDs to provide artificial lighting at night. When camera works at night, the camera can see up to 50 meters. Incorporated with Smart IR, this camera can deliver B/W video with high image quality.

In terms of interface, it has a waterproof design RJ45 Ethernet port, 1 Audio I/O and DC 12V jack. However, this multi-functional camera offers Power over Ethernet (PoE) and Alarm I/O options.

Different from other network cameras, this high-end camera has user-friendly web interface design. Enter IP address: 192.168.1.88 on your IE browser, then install the ActiveX plugin, you can instantly see the video. Its web interface is clean and simple, including Liveview, Replay, Config, Log out tabs, quite similar to Dahua network cameras.

In addition to snapshot, record, 2-way audio intercom, you can find PTZ menu on the right. Click [Images], you can adjust the image parameters including brightness, contrast etc. Since it has equipped with a motorized lens, you can click mouse to zoom in and zoom out. The camera will automatically fine tune focus to get the clear image.

Navigating to [Config] tab, you can see all the options to config the camera. Video coding can allow you to choose different video resolution and compression format. From its web interface, we can know it supports H.264 and H.265 video compression format. In terms of resolution, it supports 4MP (2592x1520), 3MP (2048x1520), 1080P (1920x1080). When you tick [Advanced] option, you can adjust bitrate and frame rate. Please note 3MP and 1080P resolution complies 16:9 video aspect ratio, so it's highly recommended to use them, instead of 4MP.

Going to [Video parameter], you will find many advanced options, in its [Basic] tab, it has Mirror, Flip, LSC, CTB, WDR and 3D-DNR, Iris mode etc options. These options offer you a great flexibility when install the camera for different applications.

Thanks to Hisilicon Hi3516D, this security camera SoC supports smart video encoding. It supports smart stream, and ROI, smart stream including bit rate stream smoothing technology and self-adaptive bandwidth technology. According to Hi3516D whitepaper, Depending on the bit rate stream smoothing technology, Hisilicon network cameras can send peak video streams evenly during frame interval according to user configuration, avoiding packet loss caused by instantaneous data increase and ensuring the stability and reliability of video stream transmission. By using the self-adaptive bandwidth technology, Hisilicon network cameras can automatically adjust the video bit rate to flexibly adapt to the changes of network bandwidth. This technology helps to achieve the best image quality and the most efficient video transmission.

Furthermore, this network camera supports ROI smart encoding, ROI can encode interested regions in video with high sufficient compression ratio. Therefore, under the same bitrate or network bandwidth, it can ensure important information will not loss, it can effectively compress image data, greatly solved the conflict between compression ratio and image quality.
